This research was part of the 'Organ donation Materplan', which was an initiative by the Dutch Ministry of Health aiming to investigate opportunities to increase the number of organ donors and the availability of transplantable organs. Data from the Dutch donor registration were combined with data of the Dutch transplantation association. Based on these real life data, we developed a decision tree that included all processes involved in organ donation, from recruiting organ donors to actual organ transplatation. We investigated the impact of several distinct interventions in these processes on the expected return in transplantation. Such interventions could for example be directed at donor recognition, permission of relatives or organ selection. The methods and results were reported to the Ministry of Health in an internal report.
